Deliveroo is defeated in bid to give ‘self-employed’ workers holidays and sick pay

The state has rejected Deliveroo’s proposal to allow companies to give workers holiday leave and sick pay while they are categorised as self-employed.

The takeaway delivery service’s workers are ‘on-demand’ riders who are not directly employed.

Deliveroo wrote to Minister for Employment Regina Doherty and met senior department officials to press its case as part of the Social Welfare Bill 2019, which is scheduled for committee stage later this month.
