British government publishes first in series of Brexit proposals

The British government has published the first in a series of papers setting out its proposals on various aspects of Brexit ahead of the resumption of negotiations with the EU.

Today's paper covers proposals for a future customs relationship with the EU and interim arrangements. It makes clear, however, that Britain wants to pursue an independent trade policy after Brexit.

Today’s proposals come ahead ofanother paper on issues surrounding Northern Ireland and the Irish border, due to be published on Wednesday. The British government describes the approaches set out in today’s paper as the first steps towards ensuring thattrade across the border with the Republic of Ireland will be as seamless as possible.
