Fewer vacant homes, more apartments - and more confusion on house building

Amid surging house prices, soaring rents and controversy over the accuracy of Government housing statistics, the Central Statistics Office has released a report on housing based on figures from Census 2016.

The CSO figures confirm that the country’s housing stock rose by just 8,800 in the five years to April 2016, representing growth of just 0.4 per cent. This compares with the 225,232 homes added in the previous five years.
