Seanad leader Jerry Buttimer said today that the 20 miles of water connecting Ireland and Scotland had facilitated strong interaction between the two countries in political, religious, economic, cultural and linguistic spheres.

He was welcomingScottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon as she made a historic address to the chamber.

Sturgeon told the assembled senatorsthat Brexit is the greatest foreign policy challenge faced by both that Ireland and Scotland. She warned that the way in which Scotland and Ireland respond would define both countries for generations to come.
