Europe’s trust in Britain is dying as it becomes apparent that its democracy is being smothered by an unholy alliance of vested interests, wealthy financiers and international investors inside the Palace of Westminster

Trying to get into the EU is just as difficult as trying to get out, as I discovered when I arrived at the European Council Summit (EUCO) meeting in Brussels last week. The Berlaymont behemoth that is the European Commission building in Brussels has a Fort Knox mentality, with heavy security and barbed-wire barricades. All doors are pass-protected and visitors routinely challenged if their wretched piece of ID plastic is not on public display. As is the Justus Lipsius building, home to EUCO itself, which last week made way for record numbers of journalists from across the globe to report on the British prime minister’s last dash for the line marked Brexit.
