Brands under pressure as own-label sales grow

Irish names take top four spots, but most top brands' reach declining

New figures show that sales of well-known consumer brands are coming under pressure as retailers respond to intense competition by expanding their own-label product ranges.

Data firm Kantar Worldpanel's Brand Footprint finds that overall branded sales have fallen by 0.2 per cent over the past year, while sales of own-label products have jumped by 6.2 per cent.

Key points from the figures

1) According to the Kantar survey, the top four brands chosen by Irish consumers are home-grown. Avonmore, which is part ofGlanbia's Dairy Ireland division, leads the way for the fifth year in a row, with 73.4 per cent of the population picking it from supermarket shelves an average of 28.8 times a year. From these figures, Kantar calculates a 'consumer reach' points score of 36.
