Bishops set up a stand-alone company to handle logistics

It was led by Anne Griffin, an experienced conference organiser who previously worked on bringing the International Eucharistic Congress to Dublin in 2012. One of the biggest tasks was recruiting the 10,500 volunteers needed to run the operation

A key figure in getting Pope Francis to Ireland was Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin. There is a photo on a side-table in the hallway of the Archbishop’s House in Drumcondra, showing Pope Francis and Martin laughing together. Both of them served together in the Vatican for years, and they are close. Back in September 2015, Martin was at the World Meeting of Families Event in Philadelphia, where Francis told him that its next venue would be Dublin in August 2018. Francis’s presence in Dublin was not confirmed at that time, but it was inevitable.
