Betting tax hike will ‘force more bookmakers to close’

There have been 26 closures since the increase in January, and there were ten between the announcement last October and the end of 2018

More bookies will go out of business this year because of the increase in the betting tax, the Irish Bookmakers Association (IBA) has claimed.

Three operators who run a number of shops each have failed in recent weeks to get the tax clearance certificates necessary to secure a bookmaking licence when it needs to be renewed in November, IBA chairwoman Sharon Byrne said.
