Developer Richard Barrett of Treasury Holdings offered “€20 million to €25 million” to fund a newspaper to rival the Irish Times, reliant on a “mass exodus” of senior Irish Times staff, it has emerged.

Barrett’s offer was extended to the Irish Times’s former environment editor Frank McDonald, and linked to a letter, signed by 80 staff, against the remuneration packages of the Irish Times’s then editor and then managing director.
