Indian medical device firm sets up European headquarters

Two companies have announced the creation of 60 new jobsin Galway.

Sahajanand Medical Technologies (SMT) is to create 50 jobs over the next five years through the establishment of its European headquartersin the city.

SMT is the largest developer and manufacturer of minimally invasive coronary stent systems in India and supplies to around 60 countries around the world. Established in 1998, SMT became the first indigenous company in India to successfully launch a coronary stent.

The Galway facility will have a state-of-the-art research, development and innovation centre. The project is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation through IDA Ireland.

"With this centre, we hope to tap into the excellent talent pool available in Galway to make further enhancements in existing products and to develop new and innovative products,” said SMT's Western European chief Gaurav Goel.

In a separate announcement, international energy services firm Wood Group said it was setting up a new data analytics centre of excellence at its office in Galway. The centre, also backed by IDA Ireland, will broaden the company's capabilities in advanced data analytics to support the oil and gas, industrial, utility and power generation sectors.

Wood Group is looking to expand its data analytics team to ten people by the end of the year with the intention of developing further employment opportunities next year.

Wood Group has sales worth around $6 billion and operates in more than 50 countries. It provides a range of engineering, production support and maintenance management services to the oil and gas, and power generation industries worldwide.

IDA Ireland chief executive Martin Shanahan welcomed both announcements.
