130,000 council tenants escape property tax

Bill of up to €30m paid by councils instead

Around 128,000 council tenants have escaped paying property tax for the past two-and-a-half years.

Councils had been expected to pass on the cost of the property tax to the tenants renting their housing stock, after paying the required sum to the Revenue. But according to a survey of the country’s 31 councils by The Sunday Business Post, just two passed on the property tax to their tenants in the form of increased rents.
