What latest Census figures tell us about Ireland

New details from CSO show an ageing, more diverse and less religious population

The Central Statistics Office has released the first detailed results from Census 2016, which was taken in April last year.

The CSO had already published preliminary findings, but today’s figures give more details on aspects such as religion, language and nationality.

Overall, the population of the state on census day was 4,761,865, up 173,613 or 3.8 per cent since the last census in 2011.
