- Preliminary census figures show there are almost 260,000 houses vacant across the country a situation described as "scandalous" and "dysfunctional".

- The number of vacant holiday homes in Dublin city centre has nearly trebled in five years.

- Sociologist Dr Micheál MacGréil believes his "deserted villages" message is reflected in the census figures, pointing out that EU policy has been to "gentrify" rather than develop the West of Ireland.
