Surgeons have welcomed the move to introduce a new grade of healthcare staff, called operating theatre assistants, at one of the biggest hospitals in the country. Operating theatre assistants are widely used to carry out non-nursing duties that are currently done by nurses, but their introduction has been resisted by the nursing union (the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation).
