President Michael D Higgins has backed criticism of US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for his anti-immigrant rhetoric.

As president, Higgins has spoken out about the need for compassion to be shown to refugees.

But during his own presidential campaign, Trump has stirred up anti-immigrant sentiment by promising to build a border wall to keep Mexicans out of the United States and to ban foreign Muslims from entering the country.
