You’ve probably not heard of Colonel John Stapp, but he was an officer in the US Air Force who decided, in the 1950s, to study the effects of sudden and violent acceleration and deceleration on the human body. To do this, he got strapped into a Wile E Coyote-style rocket-powered sled, running on rails, and subjected himself to as much as 32 times the force of gravity.
He reached speeds of more than 1,600km/h....
