The favourite came in. Supreme Court judge Justice Frank Clarke has been chosen by the cabinet to be the next chief justice.

He will replace Susan Denham when she retires next month after six years in the role.

In legal circles, Clarke is a popular choice, although the other front runners, his colleague on the Supreme Court bench Justice Donal O'Donnell and High Court President Peter Kelly are equally respected.
