Over half of all cyclists stopped by gardaí have failed to pay their fines for breaking the road traffic laws.

According to new figures, there have been 701 fixed charge fines of €40 each issued to cyclists for a variety of offences since the new system was introduced last July.

But the Garda Press Office has confirmed that so far, just 322 – or 45 per cent – of the fines have been paid.
