The cascade of threats and fury that has rained down on the Manhattan district attorney’s office from Mar-a-Lago over the past several weeks culminated in a Friday morning post by Donald Trump, the former US president, warning of “death and destruction” if he is indicted next week.

As police prepare to deal with this and other threats of violence by Trump’s supporters, the Republican Party is deeply divided about how to handle this latest crisis.
