This week’s Irish language election debate between the leaders of the four main parties is unlikely to go ahead after the Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams pulled out.
Adams, who likes to pepper his speeches with bits of Irish, pulled out because he did not feel sufficiently proficient to debate in the language.
He nominated finance spokesman Pearse Doherty in his stead, but this was not accepted by the other parties.
