Ireland is the sixth most democratic nation in the world, coming in well ahead of countries such as Britain, Germany and the US.

Only 20 countries out of 167 were categorised as full democracies by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) annual Democracy Index for 2018.

The ranking is based on five categories: electoral process and pluralism; civil liberties; the functioning of government; political participation; and political culture.
