Garda Commissioner rejects insurance industry’s €1m offer to set up fraud unit

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has rejected a €1 million industry offer to set up a specialist Garda insurance fraud unit. The insurance industry was prepared to fund the operation of the unit, which would have investigated false insurance claims.

There had been concerns that any cases brought to court could be challenged on the grounds that the unit’s investigations had been funded by insurers.
