Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar has said he will be disappointed if less than half of would-be fathers take paternity leave.
Fathers working in PAYE jobs in the public and private sector, as well as the self-employed, will be paid €230 per week from the Department of Social Protection for a two-week period – as long as their child is born after September 1.
