DePuy pays out millions over defective hip implants

Huge backlog of cases in Ireland following 2010 recall by medical devices firm

DePuy International has forked out millions of euro resolving claims from nearly 500 Irish patients fitted with allegedly defective hip implants.

The ASR and ASR XL orthopaedic products were subject to a worldwide recall in 2010 resulting in 1,092 proceedings being initiated in Ireland against the medical supplier.

Despite the recall, liability has been disputed and in 2015 the High Court gave the go-ahead to an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) process to tackle the huge backlog of cases,...
