Democrats may choose to close the book on the Mueller report

The dream of some Democrats - a Trump impeachment - may be over. But the party is likely to be thankful for that eventually

By pre-empting the Democratic-controlled House’s conclusions with his own on whether Donald Trump attempted to obstruct justice, the US attorney general William Barr has effectively scuppered attempts to impeach the president.

Ironically, his intervention may have done Democrats a favour, even if they aren’t minded to thank him for it just yet.

If the Bill Clinton impeachment experience is anything to go by, the American people prefer to have their presidents...
