Data body faces High Court over child benefit ruling

The Department of Social Protection has sought a judicial review following a case taken in Limerick

The Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) is facing its first ever High Court proceedings from a government department, after it ruled that parents should not be forced to provide certain information about their children in order to get child benefit.

The Department of Social Protection has sought a judicial review of a decision which found threatening that welfare payments will be cut off if data is not provided was in breach of the law.
