Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar has made tackling the lack of social welfare cover for the self-employed his political priority. That makes sense in a country which is trying to encourage entrepreneurship.

In a nutshell, state pensioners are demanding increases at a time when everyone is living longer. The annual pensions bill is climbing every year by up to €200 million due to increased life expectancy and currently stands at almost €7 billion.
