Four out of five disability centres are told when to expect Hiqa inspectors

Managers of disability centres are warned before Hiqa inspectors arrive in four out of five instances. These figures were extrapolated from 465 Hiqa inspection reports published since the regulator began inspecting residential disability services in 2013.

The figures are likely to fuel mounting concern about the state’s oversight of disability care after an undercover RTE investigation laid bare a litany of abuse at Áras Attracta disability care centre in Co Mayo.
