Polls have opened in Britain's historic referendum on whether to stay or quit the country's membership of the European Union.

After a lengthy and at times bitter campaign that has been overshadowed by the shocking murder last week of Labour MP Jo Cox, most opinion polls show the outcome of vote is too close to call.
