The resignation of Boris Johnson has raised hopes within the Irish government that his eventual successor will be amenable to solving the protocol row, but the candidates jockeying for position are a very mixed bag

Boris Johnson’s unshakeable confidence was despatched into the annals of history last week as he announced his intended resignation as Conservative Party leader and British prime minister outside 10 Downing Street.

Despite the rumbling controversies that characterised his final weeks in office, and despite the brutal nature of his removal, Johnson’s audacious and unapologetic jokey-blokey style continued even as he was effectively dragged out of Number 10 to deliver his resignation speech.
