US businessman David McCourt was never likely to be overawed by taking on a couple of current and former Irish semi-state companies on their own turf.

He is used to doing business with Warren Buffett, has eyeballed Ronald Reagan across a negotiating table in a past political life, and was previously seen as a contender for the job of US ambassador to Ireland.
