Without the relatively simultaneous advent of both Big Data and cloud computing, there simply would be no IoT. The scalability and flexibility of the cloud has created fertile ground for IoT to flourish.

“IoT devices produce an awful lot of data that needs to be communicated, ingested and stored, and the cloud is the only platform that can really scale at the magnitude required,” said Eamonn Doyle, chief technical officer of the ESRI.
