Ransomware is a child of the 1980s, but only just. Its first documented appearance dates back to 1989, in the form of a floppy disk fixed to a magazine calledPC Business World, posing as a free gift. When inserted, the disk triggered a series of actions which modified the user’s hard drive. A few reboots later, malware would kick in and lock the user out, demanding they send money to a PO box in Panama....
