Since taking over as general manager of Dell earlier this year, Niamh Townsend’s focus has been on getting people not to think of the firm as a PC maker.

PCs are still a significant part of the tech giant’s business, but its $67 billion purchase of EMC is the clearest sign to date that building boxes is far from the company’s top priority.
