Beyond a sound choice

The sound delivered by headphones and speakers is so good now that buyers are looking for other selling points, writes Emmet Ryan.

Top quality is taken as read with sound products in 2014. Even the earphones that come with new smartphones are reliable, without fear of a tinny sound ruining the listening experience.

The selling points now, or at least the unique ones, go beyond sound quality. With headphones, the issues that matter most to buyers are style and durability. For speakers, the debate is on portability, weight, and – to a lesser extent – aesthetics.
