Michael D Higgins has never been afraid to speak out – and during his presidency has often raised eyebrows among those who believe he has overstepped the constitutional mark.
In conversation with our Political Editor Michael Brennan this weekend, he doesn't hold back either as he reveals his deep concern that inequality in Irish society is growing even deeper.
Speaking in his office at Aras an Uachtaráin, the 75-year-old discusses Donald Trump, Apple's €13 billion tax bill, the pain of austerity inflicted on low-income earners, the way the role of the president has changed and how his own family endured Ireland's troubled past.
He also touches on his plans for the future, his health and how he he has his own yoga trainer, Michael Ryan.
He says: "Of course I’m conscious of the mileage. All of that having been said, I’m fitter now than when I started."
