Irish Red Cross "respects" Pat Carey's decision to quit

Humanitarian charity says authorities must now be given time to investigate

The Irish Red Cross today said it has been informed by its chairman Pat Carey of his decision to step down amid speculation over child abuse claims.

In a statement, the charity said former Fianna Fáil minister Carey had resigned because of "serious allegations being reported in the media".

Carey took up his position as chairperson of the charity in May of this year of this year.
