Whelan may still make run for Áras

Whelan said that if the race ends up with Michael D Higgins facing a Sinn Féin candidate then 'that choice is too narrow' and he would reconsider seeking a nomination

Barrister and political commentator Noel Whelan has emerged as a potential presidential candidate after confirming he explored running for the Áras earlier this year.

Whelan said he ruled out running when it became clear that President Michael D Higgins would seek a second term - which was confirmed last week - but he has admitted he is still considering entering the race later this year in certain circumstances.
