Civil servants were told to “sit tight” on releasing news that Minister Regina Doherty would have to repay a nearly €16,000 allowance she received when she was government chief whip.

Doherty was paid the allowance as she was one of three so-called super junior ministers who sat at cabinet, but legislation only allows for two such ministers to be paid the extra €15,829 per year.
