Private firms set to get broadband contracts for thousands of homes

Officials have warned of a danger that 'encroachment' by commercial operators like Eir and Imagine could reduce the properties available for connection under the National Broadband Plan

Private firms are likely to hoover up the broadband contracts for tens of thousands of homes, further reducing the properties available for connection under the state’s National Broadband Plan.

Eir has already provided high-speed broadband to 35,000 of the 542,000 homes in the ‘intervention area’ covered by the plan. This brings the actual number of homes to be connected down to 507,000 even before the contract with the preferred bidder, Granahan McCourt, is signed.
