Michael Noonan and his deputy Simon Harris skipped two days of meetings of eurozone finance ministers that discussed the meltdown in global markets.
It is not unusual for ministers to miss meetings unless there is a pressing item on the agenda and it is understood that Ireland’s position on the issues had been known in advance.
Irish representatives in Brussels attended the meetings in place of the ministers.
