The head of the Department of Justice has announced that he is bringing forward his resignation after his department was branded 'dysfunctional' by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

Noel Waters announced his planned retirement less than halfway through his term two weeks ago in a surprise move.

He had been due to go in February but he has now told staff in an email today that he is going immediately.
