New Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar has appointed his defeated leadership rival Simon Coveney as his new deputy leader.

Coveney will replace former Minister of Health James Reilly, who had held the position during Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s time in government.

He will be given the key task of rebuilding the Fine Gael organisation in areas where it suffered heavy general election losses, such as part of Munster, Connacht and Ulster.
