This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen. By today, Brett Kavanaugh should have taken his place as a member of the Supreme Court. Republicans should have been congratulating themselves on outmanoeuvering the Democrats after a week that was riveting, harrowing and depressing in roughly equal measure.

Chuck Grassley, the Republican Judiciary Committee chairman, should have left the battlefield bloodied and bruised, but clutching the trophy that US president Donald Trump was hellbent...
