Figures could rocket with major public-sector landowners yet to respond to queries

Government departments and state agencies are presiding over hundreds of acres of vacant lands and property running into hundreds of thousands of square feet.

An initial trawl of vacant state-owned property and land has identified 521 acres currently lying idle for which there are no plans for development.

Hundreds of buildings totalling at least 130,000 sq ft also lie idle, according to Sinn Féin TD Peadar Tóibín, who has sought the information from all government departments...
