A newly-appointed government minister has revealed how he and his partner nearly died while on holiday in Spain two years ago.

Independent TD John Halligan, who was made Minister of State for Training and Skills last Thursday, said he and his partner Elaine, a trained lifeguard, nearly drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming off the coast of Torreblanca in southern Spain in May 2014.
