Gannon threatens to quit SocDems if Kisyombe is dropped as candidate

Controversy over local election candidate’s past has exposed major rifts in the party

Ellie Kisyombe’s candidacy for the Social Democrats is at the centre of an ongoing controversy within the party

Prominent Dublin councillor Gary Gannon has threatened to quit the Social Democrats if the party decides to withdraw support from its local election candidate Ellie Kisyombe.

The fallout from the controversy over alleged discrepancies in Kisyombe’s backstory has exposed ongoing divisions between the Dáil-based leadership of the Social Democrats including TDs Catherine Murphy and Róisín Shortall, and those in the party based outside of Leinster House.
