‘The President normally sits here and the interviewer there,” Commandant Dermot O’Connor says, pointing respectively to one extreme of a gilded settee and the upright occasional chair opposite.

O’Connor and the four army colleagues who also act as aides de camp to the President have obviously ushered dozens of journalists through that door and issued the same advice about the seating arrangements again and again over the last six years....
