Flanked by jubilant supporters, the affable 38-year-old arrived at the count centre in Letterkenny shortly after 6pm yesterday evening with his wife Jackie, a Dublin native who is completing her GP training.

The Gleneely man had to endure a 16 and a half hour count before securing a seat in 2011, but things were a lot more comfortable this time, with tallies putting him well clear of the other 15 candidates.
