Burton had topped the poll five years ago, with Leo Varadkar of Fine Gael a close second. Joe Higgins took a seat for the Socialist Party, while Brian Lenihan claimed one for Fianna Fáil, its only seat in the capital.

This time, the numbers may have changed but the distribution of seats looked likely to remain the same at the time of going to press last night.
